15: Rapsody
Bereits im Kindergartenalter taucht Marlanna Evans aka Rapsody tief ins Rapgame ein. Sie spielt in MC Lytes "Poor Georgie"-Video mit, tritt als Halbstarke in North Carolina mit der Kooley High-Crew auf und veranstaltet unzählige Hip Hop-Events in der Region.
Erst als 25-Jährige bekommt sie einen Plattenvertrag - bei 9th Wonder. 2010 droppt sie ihr erstes Mixtape "Return Of The B-Girl", das unter anderem DJ Premier, Mac Miller und Big Daddy Kane featuret. Zwei Jahre später folgt das von 9th Wonder produzierte Debüt "The Idea Of Beautiful".
Alle genannten Namen und all ihre Werke beweisen es bereits: Rapsody lebt und atmet als Künstlerin den sozialkritischen Boom-Bap der Native Tongue-Ära und steht in einer Reihe mit Bahamadia oder Jean Grae. Ihren größten Erfolg im Mainstream-Musikbiz feiert sie jedoch auf dem Album eines Mannes: Kendrick Lamars "To Pimp A Butterfly" krallt sich 2015 den Grammy. Dort liefert Rapsody auf "Complexion (A Zulu Love)" feinste Zeilen gegen Rassendiskriminierung ab:
"If you don't see you beautiful in your complexion / It ain't complex to put it in context / Find the air beneath the kite, that's the context / Yeah, baby, I'm conscious, ain't no contest / If you like it, I love it, all your earth tones been blessed."
Dr. Dre erklärt Rapsody daraufhin öffentlich zu seinem neuen Lieblings-Female-MC.
